Grackle art by Jake Jackson

You never know what you’ll find inside a shark—an entire suit of steel armor, a polar bear, a pit bull head still hooked up to its leash, songbirds, porcupine quills, a bison hide, fur coats, wool overcoats, plastic rain jackets, high-heeled shoes, a valuable bottle of wine, a spool of copper wire, a keg of nails, license plates, condoms, potato chip bags, and cigarettes.

But what about what’s inside you? When was the last time you spilled your guts in a poem and found the contents revelatory?

Join me for a six-week exploration of poetic forms with built-in spill and twists that turn a poet inside out and never leave an I the same self twice. We’ll start each week with a chapter from Structure & Surprise: Engaging Poetic Turns (ed. Michael Theune, Teachers & Writers Collaborative, 2007). The goal is to expand our capacity for transformation, sprout some new sensors beyond fight and flight, and unearth surprises for both our readers and ourselves.

This advanced class is for poets with multiple writing classes under their belts. Questions? Email G&G. After class, students will receive a manageable chapter and examples to read before the next session. In Week 2, we’ll begin workshopping new poems. Poems for Monday workshops are due the Sunday before, by noon CT.
