We host workshops for people who love writing.
Grackle and Grackle is your home.
Our workshops take place in a historic artist’s studio once owned by internationally renowned painter Dorothy Hood. The Woodland Heights bungalow still hums with creative energy, once a space for canvas and paint, now a place for gathering, learning, and writing.
Our teachers are experts in their genre and gifted community builders. Our students break bread together and invest in one another’s work.
Our workshops cater to writers of all levels in general, though we also have advanced workshops several times a year geared towards advanced students.
We work with students at different income levels by offering graduated prices for classes to those on the mailing list, and scholarships for people unable to pay. Some of our offerings, like the bi-weekly Grackle Scratch Open Studio Writing Hours, are absolutely free.
If you would rather work one-on-one, Miah offers literary coaching, typically for book projects.

Classes are nonrefundable twelve days before the start day of class and beyond. If you contact us before twelve days of the start date, we can offer you a credit for 50% of the cost of the class to be used toward another class. Otherwise, there are no refunds on classes.
This is not to be punitive, but because we are a small business that makes decisions based on class size and if even a few people add and drop classes each semester, it adds to our workload, and subtracts from our ability to know if a class will make or not, and from our bottom line.

Email miah@grackleandgrackle.com and let me know exactly what amount of discount or scholarship you need to take the class. For a class that fills up quickly, we only have a couple scholarships, so email early! I always make sure anybody who wants to take a class can take a class.

In a creative writing class it is important that all students are able to share and to speak so the community is strong. If a single student endangers, bullies, or disrespects other students or the teacher by acting aggressively, by not listening or talking so much others can't engage, Grackle and Grackle reserves the right to ask them to leave, and the class will not be refunded.

If the teachers have to put off a class due to illness or weather, one more week will be added to the timeline of classes, so you won't lose a week.
In some cases, the last class may have to be on Zoom, even for an in-person class -- but this exception is rare.
If you miss a class, ask the teacher and fellow classmates what you missed.

We offer sliding scale tuition on classes to ensure that anybody who wants to take a class at Grackle and Grackle can do so. Please inquire.
