Sometimes you have three stories in the pipe and you need a writing class, fast. You want your work to fall on as many ears as possible before you revise or send it out. And sometimes you need a writing class with the space to start ten new stories, and ideas about which ones to follow, and which kinds of projects they might become. In this round of Variations in Prose, we’re devoting more time to planting seeds and in and out of class writing. We’ll also discuss the work of outside writers to water our ideas and fertilize our perspectives. Each participant will bring in one grown work for the class to discuss. How’s that for Spring?
This is an energetic, engaging prose writing class that will name and examine the unique strengths of your fiction, nonfiction, script writing, or even poetic longer project. It will offer guidance to further texturize your work into full, developed stories by exploring the murky and extensive waters of prose – of fiction and non-fiction, and all the place in-between. This class boasts a small core of talented regulars. Thus, you receive not only expert instruction from the instructor, but from exceedingly engaged and thoughtful fellow writers.
Miah Arnold, PhD, is the director of Grackle and Grackle. She has taught creative writing for the past twenty years through Houston non-profits including Inprint, Writers in the Schools, and Aurora Picture Show as well as University of Houston, University of Houston-Downtown, Houston Community College, and Georgia College. Her essay “You Owe Me” about working for M.D. Anderson via Writers in the Schools was selected by Best American Essays in 2012. Her first novel, Sweet Land of Bigamy, was published in 2012.
